AMSTI Balancing and Weighing - Lesson 1

Objectives: Students will balance a symmetrical object on a pencil.
Students will add weight to a symmetrical object and observe its effect on the object’s balance.
Students will record what they know and questions they have about balancing.
Students will discuss their ideas about balancing.

Activity: 1. Show students the butterfly that you copied and cut out. Ask them to suggest different ways they can balance it on a pencil. 2. Tell students they will have their chance to balance their own butterfly. Instruct students to get butterfly pattern and unsharpened pencil. Have them cut out butterfly. 3. Give time to let children balance butterfly. 4. Have a few children share how they balanced their butterfly. 5. Distribute jumbo paper clips. Encourage students to place the paper clip in various places on the butterfly and find new ways to balance it. 6. Ask children to share their observations.

Final Activity: 1. Have students answer :What I know about balancing” (share ideas). Record in science journals. 2. Ask and record answers to “What We would like to know about Balance”. Have children write a few ideas in their science journals.

August 30 - Day 2
Reading:

Spelling:

Language:
Objectives: (same)
Activities:  Review what a subject is and how to locate in a sentence (Who?)  Use Grammar Transparency 2 on ELMO to demonstrate/practice.
Math:
 Objective:Solve problems using separation, comparison, and part-whole (story problems). ALCOS 2
Activities: * math meeting/fact practice
                  * daily data: 'Tally Tuesday'
                   * reteaching act. in SF 15b
                  * wb 15 - 16 - do together using manipulatives if necessary

Social Science:
AMSTI Balancing and Weighing - Lesson 2

Objectives: Students will build structures that balance.
Students will describe their structures and share their observations about balancing.
Students will discuss balancing and weighing in the world around them.

Activity: 1. Tell students that they will use various materials to build a structure that balances. 2. Divide the students into pairs. Have one student collect 20 unifix cubes, a fulcrum, & a beam. 3. Ask students to build their structure. 4. When they have completed their structures, ask them to leave them on their desks.

Final Activity: Invite a few students to describe their structure. Have students dismantle their structures and return materials to the distribution center. Next, display the chart “Ways We Balance and Weigh”. Record students’ ideas on the chart. Keep chart on display so students can add to it over the next few weeks.

August 31 - Day 3
Reading:

Spelling:

Language:
Objectives: (same)
Activities:  Use Smartboard lesson, “Language Arts - Sentences” (sent to you by email) to practice identifying the subject of sentences.  **Also use Grammar and Writing practice pg. 6 on ELMO to demonstrate/practice.

Social Science:
AMSTI Balancing and Weighing - Lesson 3  **May carry over to Day 4**

Objectives: Students will build a beam balance.
Students will explore how the amount of weight and position of weight affect balance.
Students will discuss the various ways they were able to balance the beam.
Students will read about a 7 year old gymnast.

Activity: 1. Review previous lesson with students. 2. Record ideas of “What might happen if weight is added to the beam balance?” 3. Have children gather materials for today’s lesson. 4. Have children build balance beams. Once assembled, have them explore what happens when they place the Unifix cubes on the beam. Encourage them to place the cubes in various places. 5. Have students draw and write about 2 discoveries they made. 6. Have children clean up and get ready for final activities.

Final Activities: 1. Use questions from Lesson 3 Final Activities to lead discussion of what we’ve learned. 2. Distribute copies of “Julie’s Balancing Act”. Read the story to the class or have students read it aloud in pairs.

September 1 - Day 4
Reading:

Spelling:

Language:
Objectives: (same)
Activities:  Practice writing sentences correctly.  Have students fold a piece of notebook paper into fourths.  Write the title, “I Have a Wonderful Family!” in the center.  Guide students as they write one complete sentence in each box.  Share in small groups or whole group as time allows.

**May have to carry over to Friday** Finish Friday by reviewing

Objectives: Students will balance a beam with Unifix cubes by changing the position of the fulcrum.

Students will describe and compare their observations.
Students will record their results.
Students will add their observations of balancing and weighing in the world around them to the
class list.

Activities: 1. Review previous lesson with children. 2. Display chart “The Fulcrum and Beam”. Describe what children will do in this lesson. 3. Working in pairs, have the children place the Unifix cubes on the beam the way that it is shown on the paper. 4. Have children record on their paper where the fulcrum was placed in order to balance the beam. 5. When finished, have children clean up.

Final Activities: 1. Use questions on Lesson 4 Final Activities to lead discussion about the children’s findings.
